I had a crack at a bit of stand up, maybe I’ll do some more.
I had a crack at a bit of stand up, maybe I’ll do some more.
So, following on from ‘An angry expression of a possible dismal future‘, I realised maybe I was wrong. I made an appearance at a spoken word event and there were some really great kids doing some exciting stuff. To balance things out, I wanted to argue with myself… so I wrote this:
Chill your boots Tippers, you’ve got this wrong.
Like a daily mail reader, banging the gong.
You see you’re focussing on one or two baddens,
and it’s that kind of attitude that I’m afraid, well, it saddens.
My friend, you’re a positive guy with a bright disposition
Your mum taught you manners and to feed your ambitions.
You learnt about politeness and answers to questions
and listened and grew from peer made suggestions
But I still remember a certain chap of 18,
Not a child, nor adult but somewhere between
who woke in his vomit yet went back to slumber
with two days in porcelain to vomit and chunder.
The kid who got drunk and made silly mistakes
whose mouth rained out shit with no use of the brakes
You thought you knew it all, an elitist tit
But son, by far, you were never quite it.
And I know you know that it’s all part of growing
and I know you’re grateful to those parents you’re owing.
So firstly let’s look at those kids you’re accusing
of being behind and seemingly not choosing
a life spent with intellect and rational knowledge
Of schooling and uni and skills learnt in college.
Maybe they haven’t had the opportunities you got
to be encouraged to think, right out of the cot.
Maybe they need confidence and not just a voice
who blames them for something that wasn’t their choice
Maybe they do choose to be not like you
And why not? Why should everyone do as you do
The world would be boring if everyone was the same
So cheer up and grow up, stop portioning blame.
Secondly, there’s a lot of kids who are absolutely amazing
Why not focus on them and start some appraising
Like Boyan Slat who is cleaning the sea
Of previous generation’s shit and debris
The first person to walk on mars is alive and walking
I notice you’re not an astronaut, so let’s look who’s talking.
The point is, it’s easy to see fault.
But let’s put that negativity in an unopenable vault.
Yes, some kids are bad and do cause some crap
but most kids are awesome, so don’t fall in the trap
Nobody is perfect we just need to inspire
The next generations to build this empire
Praise folks, encourage and always see good
It’s not always easy, but try harder we should.
So, whilst it’s nice to spit lyrics and rhymes
Don’t be an arse, tippers, let’s get with the times.
As a species we educate over time,
We learn new words and then make them rhyme.
We invented the cart and the wheel
Learned to build and to steal
We made cars and then trains
built the bombs dropped from planes
Made the microchip and computers
filled tube trains with commuters
I’m not so subtly hinting
My rose glasses need some tinting…
Strong metaphors of disaster
No longer heard by a master
Are we improving our brains over time?
As we embrace such stupidity and crime?
I ask, when did it become so cool to be dumb?
Rows of pupils, empty and numb.
The Facebook generation seeks to go viral
A whole generation in a downward spiral.
We used to strive for glory and respect
But glory’s gone, our hope’s ship wrecked.
Bullying is fun, we laughed as they cried
But no one expects them to commit suicide
But still there’s no empathy
No thought, care of sympathy
As long as your Instagram has 1000’s of likes
You’ve smashed a shop window and stolen some nikes
Your hero can’t even spell his own name
But he’s just a pawn in the business man’s game
Of the rich getting richer
of a lifestyle of fame, money and cars
and painting the picture
That the poor can envy, whilst fighting in bars
Let me stop here a second
Maybe I’m exaggerating, it’s not all that bad
This is temporary? A moronic fad.
The kids that think the Titanic was just a movie
or post very public snapchats of themselves getting groovy.
Those that can’t name a european city
Or think politics is just boring and shitty
Those kids who have kids and more kids
Whose kids have kids have kids have kids.
All within about a 15 year span
But I’d be a facist to suggest, some sort of ban.
I know we all grow into adult life
we change, we live, get a husband or wife.
But I can’t see that from this group of kids now
More obsessed with selfies, than what, why or how.
I’m probably just a self righteous old miser.
But our future’s fucked, unless this generation gets wiser.
I began life as a Christian, or at least I was told that.
Baptised to the lord, in my cute gown and white cap.
My childhood spent in pews, singing hymns about Jesus
How we’re all going to heaven and that’s meant to please us.
But religion has changed for me in my formative years
Not least through talk in dark pubs over beers.
But let me stop here, and explain something quick.
I quit religion, but I don’t think it’s a trick
I appreciate my parents and how I was raised.
Even if I no longer see that ‘lord’ I once praised.
God taught me some things in patience and love
Be good here on earth, but ignore what’s above.
The morals they teach, war and killing aside.
Should very much, I believe, be kept well and alive
Be good to each other, help fellow man.
If she needs you to do it, go shop for you gran.
Don’t steal, be a twat or in other ways hurt folks.
Share love, write music and tell all your bad jokes.
Nowadays I believe in science and technology.
I’m obsessed with deep space and all forms of astronomy.
If it’s proven and fact then I’m game to believe.
It’s amazing what mere humans can achieve.
We invent, we inspire, we heal and we fix.
We build and create using wires and bricks.
We’re living in space and flew to the moon.
We’d just learnt to fly but got there so soon.
What’s set for tomorrow and for years to come?
One things for sure, this species is not done.
I love this world, I truly think it’s ace
It doesn’t need explain by spirits with no face.
I love the folks who live here, even though some are nasty
But it’s our job to help them and create memories that are lasting.
We are who we are and we’ll all die the same.
So whilst we’re here, be good, be kind, play the game.
